Looking For Images Of Letterpress Script Faces

I will be speaking at TYPO Berlin “Sustain” next week and am currently hard at work on my entirely new presentation From Metal Scripts to Digital Writing . I trace back the reproduction of handwriting from the earliest scripts for letterpress to feature-rich OpenType fonts with artificial intelligence that mimic the decisions made by letterers and calligraphers.

Man & Gun And Les Bleus de Ramville Win SXSW Film Design Awards

Originally South by Southwest – a riff on Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest – was only a music festival, first organised in 1987. Seven years later SXSW expanded by adding the SXSW Film and Multimedia Conference, and in 1995 those were split into two components – SXSW FILM and SXSW Interactive. Just like most film festivals SXSW has its own SXSW Film Awards, focusing on new directing talent.

SXSW Aftermath – Adventures In Film

Presenting at SXSW Interactive 2012 entitled me to a complimentary Gold Pass – access to the full programming of both the Interactive conference and SXSW Film. Like I explained in the previous post there were few design-related panels that were of interest to me. And apart from Sean McBride ’s Get the Look: Use @Font-Face + CSS3 Like the Stars the only other type-centric event was the Passion For Typography Meet Up organised by Interactive Festival Producer and Rock That Font founder Shawn O’Keefe .

Well, my trip and presentation at SXSW Interactive 2012 sure were an experience. Beyond the overwhelming scale – 20,000 visitors and 2,587 panellists in the giant Austin Convention Center and satellite locations – unfortunately it wasn’t as interesting for me personally as I would have liked it to be. Searching through the sprawling schedule I had a hard time finding typography and design-related panels that weren’t primarily code-based

FontShop Fan Video Celebrates Typeface Diversity

Discovering a fan video is always a fun experience. Just like Jürgen Siebert once came across what he called the Font Karaoke project by Central St Martins student Fran Marchesi, last week FontFont Marketing Manager Ivo Gabrowitsch found a charming fan video for FontShop. The mysterious Meghan Dailey (I couldn’t find any information on her yet) created “[a]n advertisement targeted to people who are not designers telling them how expressive choosing a font can be and how many different ways there are to say one word using a font.” FontShop from Meghan Dailey on Vimeo

Ben l’Oncle Soul Recreates Vintage Motown Look

I am a bit on the fence about nostalgic looking music videos – and any form of vintage design by extension. On the one hand our fascination with “authenticity” and referencing specific periods in design history may at times be holding us back from truly advancing the field of design and typography

An announcement before we get started. My presentation at the BNO Romeo Delta evening CUT! at De Unie in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, originally scheduled on January 23, was cancelled due to my father’s passing. Romeo Delta have now decided to extend their movie theme with a second night, aptly named CUT #2, on Monday, February 20, also at De Unie.
